The classified ads can be viewed for free, however, require the users to pay if they want to post a job opportunity. Also, all other postings are free.

Let’s take a brief look at how it all started Craigslist was founded by Craig Newmark who was new to the San Francisco bay area and felt isolated as a newbie in 1995. He observed people using the Usenet, WELL and MindVox and helping each other in social and trusting communal ways on the internet and decided to create something similar for local events. He started an email distribution list to friends in early 1995. Most of the early postings were submitted by Newmark and were notices of social events of interest to software and Internet developers living and working in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Word of mouth soon led to rapid growth and the number of postings and subscribers grew rapidly. People started using the mailing list for non-event postings as well which surprised Newmark. People found that the list was a great way to get technical positions filled by reaching people with the skills they were on the lookout for. This led to the addition of a jobs category. The list of categories kept growing due to user demand for various other categories. The initial technology encountered some limits, so by June 1995 majordomo had been installed and the mailing list “Craigslist” resumed operations. Web interface was demanded by community members and Newmark registered “craigslist.org” which went live in 1996.
Newmark initially named the advertisement forum as “List Foundation” in 1998. However, he dropped the name in 1999 upon learning of other organizations with the same name. The site started growing at such an increasing pace that Newmark quit his job as a software engineer and began running Craigslist full-time.
The current CEO Jim Buckmaster joined the company as lead programmer and CTO in January 2000. There were nine more employees working for the startup by April 2000.
The website expanded into nine more U.S. cities in 2000, four in 2001 and 2002 each, and 14 in 2003. It began charging $25 to post job openings in the New York and Los Angeles area in 2004.
